The BMW M2 Competition: The Ultimate Driving Experience

M2 Competition Design

The BMW M2 Competition is the ultimate driver’s car. Combining luxury appointments with sheer heart-racing thrill and performance, the M2 is the epitome of what the M model set out to create. A racecar combined with a luxury vehicle. The M2 has all the classic signs of a BMW sports car. A dominate kidney grille, enlarged air inlets, and consistent M2 badge branding through the interior and exterior. The car itself has an attention-demanding stance with its muscular design lines and sporty coupé outline.

The stats you want to know:

  • 6-cylinder inline engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology
  • Output of 302kW (410hp)
  • A maximum torque of 550Nm

Exterior Design

Specific Front Apron

The front end of the BMW M2 competition is home to both the iconic M model kidney-shaped grille and impactful external air vents. The air inlets are both visually pleasing and functional, allowing air to flow through the front of the vehicle, increasing its aerodynamics.

Side Air Vents

Throughout the entire BMW M series, each model has a characteristic side air vent emblazoned with the specified M range badge. This side air vent has become synonymous with the luxurious feel upon entering a BMW M model vehicle and is an indicator of a top-of-the-line BMW.

Exterior Mirrors

For additional aerodynamics, the M2 Competition has streamlined exterior mirrors that minimise air disruption and emphasise the beauty of the vehicle. Further enhancing their aesthetic, the indicator on each mirror fits flush within the design lines to create a seamless flow.

Black Chrome Tail Pipes

A tell-tale sign for many car enthusiasts when figuring out the performance of a car is the look of its tailpipes. The BMW M2 Competition has twin black chrome tailpipes on both the left and right-hand side of the car.

M2 Competition Badge

When you are in traffic those behind you will be aware of the high performance and class of your BMW with the M2 Competition badge sitting proudly on the upper rear of the vehicle.

Light Alloy Wheels

The 19-inch alloy wheels Y-spoke design adds to the sporty feel of the BMW M2 Competition. The alloys are available in a dark finish so you can achieve whatever look you desire.

Interior Design

Leather Steering Wheel

The BMW M2 Competition brings everything you need within reach of your fingertips. As the road conditions or terrain changes the driver has full access to the M Drive settings to readjust the drive of the vehicle. The steering wheel itself is designed for maximum comfort with an ergonomically contoured design complete with thumb rests. For added safety, the leather steering wheel also houses a driver-side airbag in case of an accident.

Sports Seats

To truly feel as though you are behind the wheel of a born-again race car, the BMW M2 Competition comes with racing-inspired bucket seats. Both the seats and headrests are fully adjustable down to the millimetre, allowing the driver and passenger to achieve the ultimate in driving comfort.

Specific Instrument Display

The instrument display in the BMW M2 Competition is focused on giving the driver a more traditional view on the performance of their car. The speedometer and tachometer are displayed in two round instruments with a red indicator needle to give a classic view of the performance of the car. In the centre of the vehicle, you will find the Info Display, which gives the driver and passenger access to other functions from the onboard computer system.

M Seat Belts

Throughout the entire BMW M2 Competition, you will notice highlights of the car’s performance in subtle branding. This includes the M seatbelts. The seatbelts have the iconic red and blue lines of the M model logo interwoven into their material to add to the overall design aesthetic of the M2 sports car.

High-Performance Highlights

The BMW M2 Engine

Behind the growl of the BMW M2 Competition is a high-performance M TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder petrol engine. Equipped with dual mono-scroll turbochargers and high-precision injection, the M2 can reach speeds of 100km/h in 4.2 seconds and has an output of 302kW.

Sports Brakes

When you are creating a sports car that is as capable as the BMW M2 Competition, they must be equipped with brakes that can handle the engine’s power. The large compound M Sport brake discs have six-piston fixed callipers at the front and four-piston fixed callipers at the rear. This works to increase fade stability and thermal stability, so you always have powerful braking when you need it.

Sports Exhaust System

BMW’s are known for the sound they produce, and this is especially true for the high-performance M range. To meet the want of the driver, the M Sports exhaust system can be adjusted to deliver varying sounds.

M Specific Suspension

As with the full range of BMW M model vehicles, each suspension set is specified to the needs of each car. This allows for a truly dynamic driving experience and the ability to adjust the suspension depending on the surface of the road and driving conditions to optimise stability.

7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission

The BMW M2 Competition gives the driver the best of both worlds when it comes to using an automatic or manual transmission. By using the paddle switches on the steering wheel or the gearshift you can drive the car manually without needing to slow down, use the clutch, or lose power. For those wanting a fully automatic ride, the M2 can also be left to its own devices and select the appropriate gear based on your speed and revs.

What’s Under the Hood? The M2 Competition Engine

A car like the BMW M2 Competition only garners the attention and praise it has if it boasts the engine to back its power. The M2 Competition has a mighty M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine that is more than enough to excite any driver let alone BMW M model fans.

BMW M2 Competition stats:

  • The figures in brackets refer to the vehicle with seven-speed M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic
  • Fuel consumption in l/100 km (combined): 10.0 – 9.8 (9.2 – 9.0)
  • CO2 emissions in g/km (combined): 227 – 224 (209 – 206)

Performance Enhanced

The team at BMW have engineered the BMW M2 Competition 3 litre inline 6-cylinder motor to achieve similar power to a traditional V8 engine without using the same level of petrol a V8 engine requires. However, this is not where the clever engineering of the M2 engine ends. BMW has equipped the racy sports car with two MonoScroll turbochargers giving the car an extra 40 horsepower in total and an 11% increase in overall performance.

Impressive Power

To give the BMW M2 Competition more power, BMW has taken the cooling system from the BMW M4. Adding an additional two lateral and one central radiator, allowing the M2 to take on more air and therefore create a greater output. With the twin turbos grumbling away underneath the hood, the M2 has also gained an extra 85Nm of torque, an increase of 18% from previous models. These impressive additions accumulate into a sportscar that feels more than ready for the racetrack.

Absolute Steering Precision

To increase the steering precision of the M2 Competition, BMW has increased the stiffness of the front end of the vehicle. They achieved this result by replacing the precision strut with a carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). This material allows for more precise steering with a minimal weight addition, weighing in at only 1.5 kilograms.
